Philadelphia 76ERS withdraws plans for new stadium

The Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) have withdrawn their plans to build a new stadium.

The "AP" reported on the 13th (Korea Standard Time) that the 76ers canceled plans to spend $1.3 billion to build a new stadium in downtown Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Inquirer, a leading Philadelphia media outlet, also confirmed this, citing multiple city council officials.

Philadelphia had previously obtained approval from the Philadelphia city government in September last year for the construction of a new stadium and the city council's approval in December.

The construction of the stadium was expected to begin in earnest with the aim of completing it in 2031, but the opposite result came out.

It is not known why the club withdrew its plan.
It is conceivable. It was a controversial plan in the first place. Despite the support of the mayor and the city council, the plan to build a stadium in the Chinatown area of downtown Philadelphia was met with a lot of opposition.

The AP introduced that there was a backlash that the construction of the stadium could cause traffic congestion and gentrification (a phenomenon in which existing residents are pushed out due to the development of degraded neighborhoods and rising housing prices and rents).

In particular, there has been a movement against real estate development since the 1960s in the Chinatown area. 안전놀이터

In 1991, a highway was built across Chinatown, sparking a backlash. In the end, there was a case where an agreement was reached to create a park connecting the two areas divided above the highway and obtain a $159 million subsidy.

Those who supported the stadium construction plan seem perplexed. Jimmy Harrity, a city councilor who supported the construction of the stadium, told the Philadelphia Inquirer, "I'm so angry that I don't know what to do. I feel like I've been used as a long term."

The 76ers have instead agreed a new lease agreement with Comcast Spectator, which owns the Wells Fargo Center south of the city. The contract is not yet known.

The 76ers share the Wells Fargo Center with the NHL club Flyers owned by Comcast Spectator.
